plot: man (steve) takes woman (amanda, played by Ginger Rogers) to a psychoanalyst (Tony, played by Fred Astaire) to help her commit to a likely upcoming wedding. amanda and her aunt Cora, as well as steve all seem wealthy. frequent the medfield country club. tony orders her a dream-invoking diet and ordered a sedative to promote dreams that he could psychoanalyze, gave her anesthesia (sodium amytal? but that can be given orally as far as i can tell), and hypnotized her with a flashing light. she lies to remain his patient as she falls in love with him, he hypnotizes her to love steve and hate him, he realizes he loves her, tries to reverse the hypnotism, and eventually succeeds, and he steals him from steve just about at the altar.
movie: just nice to watch the dance scenes, her outfits, the songs. amazing the choreography. sorta like bollywood movies- people breaking out in song at opportune times. but the movie's less than 2 hours long though...
about psych: full of misconceptions of psych. a lot of psychobabble about neuroses, treating her as if she was just an "interesting case" and not a real person, tony being a "scientist" by trying all these "new" things on her. but she kept on escaping inadvertently with the "therapies" still in effect. his orderly gave her aunt the sedative by accident. they had to gas her with the anesthesia while she was on a medical examining table. hypnotism doesn't involve controlling people's thoughts, forcing people to think certain ways or not (she was acting on the inserted thought that tony is a monster and should be shot down like a dog...).
the worst part was the lack of any boundaries. they go dancing together, dine together, he holds her hand while she reluctantly gets the anesthesia, and then he marries her. ugh. carefree indeed...
