integrity vs. despair

approx 60yrs - death
integrity = "acceptance of one's one and only life cycle and of the people who have become significqnt to it as something that had to be and that, by necessity, permitted of no substitutions"
relinquishes the wish that important people in his life had been different and is able to love in a more meaningful way
acceptance of responsiblity of one's own life
wisdom
room to tolerate the proxiity of death and to achieve a "detached yet active concern with life"

despair-
deeply disgusted with the external world and contemptuous of persons as well as institutions
disgust masks a fear of death and a sense of despair that time is now short, too short in attempt to start a new life
